The E60 is very reliable. Among cars in the luxury sport segment, only Lexus models have fewer problems - and that's saying something. And you can expect that the E60 will get more reliable with each model year.
Audi just dropped it's 4-year maintenance program. And MB has scaled back on that too. Other than Lexus, only Jaguar can keep pace with BMW on build quality.
As others have mentioned here, participants in forums like this may represent a somewhat higher proportion of owners with problems. In part, that's how you find a forum like this. But I also think that since most of us here are very enthusiatic about the E60, we tend to have very high expectations, so we notice every little thing and report on them.
Don't worry.

2000 miles. The only problem I have is the automatic headlights turn on even under bright sunlight. For what I read on the forum, no stable fix yet. True?

How should I say this, the people on this forum including me want their cars to be perfect. Our car will have the slightest problem and we will know it because we are professional (after joining this forum ) most of us know more about our car than the SA that works at the dealer.
Overall the car is reliable but there are just little things that annoys me like the chrome trim around my window is not perfect, the tires make too much noise, the seats makes too much noise, the cd player don't support mp3s, there are idiot stickers all over the car, the transmission is not responsive, the iDrive is not responsive, the dimming mirror is not responsive.....and the list goes on. Alot of the average Joe doesn't give a bloody care to all of these but we as e60.net members do, so there you go.

My Ride: 2005 525i Titanium Silver Metalic and 2003 325xi Jet Black with the Premium Package in both cars.
13,500 miles with no problems, except those lousy cheap door seals which are being replaced tomorrow. The e60 is a great car. Congrats on your new 530xi.

Electrical problem? No. Software problem? Quite a few. Covered by warranty and fixed. So far, knock on wood. No problem at all except door seal sqeaking like an old wooden boat which I don't expect from $50K+ car.
I have roughly 38000 miles so far.

[/quote]Here's the JD Power press release showing BMW ranked 3rd overall in initial quality (behind Lexus and Jaguar), and the E60 ranks 2nd to the Lexus in the mid-luxury segment.

You should keep in mind that reading any car enthusiast forum will scare you out of buying any car. The majority of people on these forums are perfectionists/anal (myself included...although over the last few years I've made great progress on the 12 step program... ). This is not a statistically random sample of car owners, and on top of that, for every 1 person on these forums that posts saying how pleased they are with their cars, there are 25...or 50 who post about a problem they have--hoping to get insight from other forum members, or just to vent.
Having said that, be aware that with any technologically advanced (otherwise know as being on the (b)leading edge ) product--and especially as cars become more and more controlled by software and silicon--that "bugs" are a fact of life. It's a trade off--get the latest features, understanding the price you pay, or go with a less technologically advanced car if stability is your priority.
FWIW, I've had my 545i for 9 months and the only issues I've had were with the window anti-trap mechanism. Much better experience than my last 4 cars!
