I think I've looked before a while back but never found the answer... if we can do this on regular E60 SMGs (non M5)


But on SMG III

After changing wheels/tires, the slip detection feature of the Sequential M Gearbox must be familiarised with the modified status.

To this end, reinitialise the system:
1) On a straight road, at a speed of between 30 km/h and 150 km/h (20 and 90 mph) move the selector lever to neutral N.
2) Pull both shift paddles for approx. 2 seconds.

If you do not perform the initialising procedure, the system will gradually learn the modified status automatically as the car is driven. You may notice this procedure in form of temporary disengaging and re-engaging of the clutch.

The SMG on the E60 is so different than on the M5 that I'm thinking that this procedure won't work with the non-M cars...

I don't think so. I did some checking in TIS and found an SMG-III overview document that goes over the entire system. (you can find the new M5 & M6 overview document here)

In this document, you'll see on page 8 a function called "slip detection" -- I don't recall seeing such a function on the non-M SMG overview document in the gallery...
