Red Turn Indicators

Does anyone know how BMW decides the color for the rear turn signal lamps? Having done a fair amount of driving in Germany, I always considered it to be a safety issue - you don't want to be trying to decide whether you just saw a blinker or a brake light at Autobahn speeds.
But here they seem to flip back and forth between yellow (amber) and red.
Anybody know why?

For the same reason stated by davemayo, I prefer an amber turn signal, in particular clear lenses with amber light source.
Sometimes, sunlight reflecting off an amber or red lens makes it hard to ascertain if it the light source is emitting. I understand that color lenses are needed to serve as reflectors in the dark.

because in the US you can have your brake light flash as your turn signal.
many manufacturers(especially foreign) design their cars with a separate turn signal in the rear, and sell the same car abroad and here without having to redo the lights. bmw decided to put in red flashers recently just to match other american cars having red flashers/brake lights.
i wish the US would adopt the amber rear flashers, as it just makes sense.
