I am going to be receiving my 530 in about a week and i was very dissapointed to read all these posts about how someone finally did the 1200 miles and then red lined the speedo ...
So do i have to do the 1200 miles and then only push hard on the gas ?
and what if i floor it before the 1200 mark ???

I would consider the car broken in a bit before BMW says, but not way earlier than the 1,200 mi. mark. In other words, I would follow BMW's break-in recommendations pretty closely--especially when it comes to doing things that might produce strain/heavy engine loads. But, what would happen? Nothing probably--especially if you are in the 800 or so mi. area (mostly a guess).

Unfortunately, PSB, if you redline before 1,200 miles, your car will blow itself into tiny little pieces.

May God help you.

Give it 400 miles of the gentle approach and then start getting more aggressive. Keep varying your engine speed and don't be shy off hitting 5000 revs in any gear after about 400 miles. Dont go higher than 5000 until you have done about 1000 miles and then its pedal to the metal time.....

Doing it the way described above is better than poodling along for 1200 miles and then suddenly giving the engine a jolt.

Agree!

But hey i bealive that the brake-in stuff is for the benefit of the engine to last for years and years and hit 200 000 km without too much fuss. But who is gona own a 5 series for 10 years or to drive it to 300-400000km?
Got my point?

I have not owned a car (BMW) with over 60K km's on it since the '80's, but I still belive the brake in
is good to do.

Why?

Because one needs to have some self-respect and respect for things that makes their property
a little bit more valued.

Too thick?

It'll be fine... it might only last 180,000 miles instead of 200,000 miles or... only 13 years instead of 14 years.

Plus part of me believes that if you beat on it HARD from day 1 you get a stronger engine.

BUT all those said I followed the break in procedues pretty closely. A few times above 4500 rpms... a few times stretching its legs and winding it up clost to redline before 1200 miles. I think its good to let the engine experience a little of what there is to come. Let it get use to things.
