Rectangrings and cam ledge's.... Oh my!
Yepp.. Another cam ledge gone bad.
I just bought a 2010 535ix with 84,567 miles. Bought as is. 20 min's down the road from the dealership the Check Engine light comes on and the car goes into reduced power mode and no boost. Scan tool shows camshaft correlation and misfire. I scour the internet and see post after post on cam bearing ledge's. After replacing both VANOS solenoids and both camshaft positioning sensors and getting the same results I crack into the engine to inspect the ledge's and there it is on the intake cam ledge... The wear marks but the rectangrings are good. Still hooked together and no failure.?. I have ordered and received the new updated rectangrings. Can I install the new rings and fix my problem or am I going to "have" to replace the cam ledge's? A local fabrication shop is of the opinion that they can fill in the grooves from the rectangrings and polish the ledges and they'll be fine. And yes the shop knows the cam ledge's are aluminum. I look forward to the communities response and look forward to being a contributing member. Thank you everyone for your input to this thread.

I got such a huge response to my post (😂 that I wanted to update it and let everyone know that I have replaced the camshaft bearing ledges and my 535 is fixed and running great. So if anyone needs any information on the procedure or needs to buy or rent the cam tool you can reach me through the forum here or via email at clittle1272@gmail.com and if you live within 100 miles of my home address I may be willing to come and assist you in the repair. Thanks again everyone.

I don't know how to insert a picture here but the grooves in my ledges were about a 16th of an inch deep and looked like they were factory machined there but of course they were not. If you can tell me how to insert a picture of the cam ledge's I will be more than happy to or if you want to share your email address I can send you the pictures.
