yes, stuff in cans has been around for some time. However, many tyre dealers will refuse to work with wheels that have been temporarily 'repaired' by it, as the tre is full of sticky gunk.

In the last 6 months we have bought two small fiats in my family (grande punto). The lower spec model came with a spare tyre, the higher spec has no spare, and no run flats. In the boot (trunk) you get an electric pump with a built in canister of sealing gunk.

Except that:

1. With airbags and seatbelts, you do not have a choice anymore. Nor are they wear and tear items regularly replaced during the life of a car. And I'm struggling very hard to think of any significant day-to-day disadvantages for either a seat belt or an airbag.

2. There are plenty of cases of people that have had their lives saved by 'belts and 'bags. Including myself (seat belt) - though probably I just saved myself a big knock on the head. I am not sure - as exposed in several postings in this thread - that there are circumstances where a run flat really can save your life, unless the car has been designed from the ground up to fit RFT's handling characteristics (e.g. E90). Which the E60 has not.

if its just lifesaving qualities thats interesting, you can buy bands that go inside the wheel that fill the 'valley' inside the rim. This is supposed to better control the movement of the tyre and stop it collapsing into the wheel. This gives a little better control to allow you to stop. These are popular fitments on trailer caravans

It might not be necessary to pay 70% more for a high tech tyre
