SI B12 06 06
Engine Electrical Systems April 2006
Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Voluntary Emissions Recall 06E-A01: N52 - Reprogramming Vehicle for OBD Diagnostic

MODEL
E90, E91 and E60, E61 with N52 produced up to 10/04/2005

SITUATION
The DME programming, as originally installed, may cause the OBD diagnostic not to detect potential malfunctions of various emission relevant sensors. As a result, in case of a sensor malfunction, a pending fault code will be erased rather then permanently stored in the DME memory. Consequently, the "Service Engine Soon" light will not illuminate.

In one case (P1030 Valvetronic position control), the diagnostic works correctly, but the scan tool cannot read out the fault code.

This diagnostic software error would not cause any drivability problems.

In order to remedy this situation, BMW is conducting a Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign to reprogram the DME control module on all affected vehicles. With the completion of this campaign, the software in the E90, E91, E60, E61 vehicle's control units will be updated as described in SI B09 05 01 (Coding, Individualization, Programming) Procedure B.

A copy of the customer letter is attached.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Recall Campaign involves 325i/iA/xi/xiA/xiTA, 330i/iA/xi/xiA, 525i/iA/xi/xiA and 530i/iA/xi/xiA/xiTA vehicles with N52 engines which were produced up to 10/04/2005.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-319) and with a ball point pen print your dealer code (5 digits) on the Recall Completion Label (see illustration). Peel the label from its backing and affix it to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to windshield.

For California centers only: It is required by the California Code of Regulations that an executed orange "Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction" certificate (SD92-084, see illustration) be provided to each customer (for vehicles registered in the state of California) once the Recall on their vehicle has been completed.

Is this another kind of cheating from BMW? It's the same as M54 engine emission recall.
BMW wants to impress buyer at the test drive and then issue the recall.

Chassis number is the last 7 digits of your VIN. If you do not know your VIN, in teh US the VIN is seen from the looking thru the lower windshield area on drivers side. Not sure in ROW.

Pretty cynical view of a good process. Dealer does not know of recall until it is issued. Now that it is issued and they know, they are now required to fix the car prior to delivery. The owner has no drivability issues if he has the problem. So the next time you are in for service - routine or otherwise - it will be fixed. What is your problem?
