Hi

I have a BMW 525D E60 2004 plate, I have noticed when I push on the rear window defrost button my stereo starts to hisss when tuned into a radio station, it seems like there is interferance with the defrosting of the rear window and my radio signal, has anyone come across this and what the best way to resolve the problem??

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

This is an old BMW favourite! (I've heard it reported on many, many different models now, and I had it on my e46)
It stems from the use of the rear window matrix for defrosting, radio and key fob ariels.

It might be a fault/break in the metal strip (unlikely) or instead remove the trim panels and check all the connections are good and tight.
That's the zero cost option but will require some work on your part. Alternatively you might get the dealer or a car audio specialist to look at it.

I've seen them swap out everything from rear window, cables, ariel amp, headunit for this fault so watch the work they claim they need to do.
HTH

PS - BTW, welcome!

PPS - you might find reception is worse on AM with this fault.

Jonno

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping not to pull the car apart, do you know of any good BMW guys who can deal with this issue?

cheers

Depends - where are you?
You might want to update your profile with car & location as this will help with techincal stuff.
cheers

KO - here you go:

I should stress that I've not used these places - they are recommended by other BMW owners. I've no connections with any either.
Might be worth calling and seeing what they suggest - including if they've encountered this issue before on the e60/e61.
Check if they will charge for a check or just fixing the problem too.

My Ride: BMW 520i, March 2004, Silver Grey, 68000 Miles, PDC, DIY iPod Setup with remote control, GLOVE BOX TORCH- YES! It might only be a 520i, but you've got to start somewhere! It's my first decent ride, and I'm still only 22. And unlike some this ain't Daddy's - it's all mine!

I've had this aswell on my 2004 520i, around when I first got it back in January. Happened once or twice over the first few days, and it has never come back. I always thought it was because I was using an FM transmitter for my iPod - I never imagined it would have been there on ANY radio station. Thats insane!

happens to me on cue, just press the defrost, and boom the FM reception is gone. Dealer said they ordred a new antenna component and I need to get it installed sometime soon. Not sure if that will fix it.

I had exact same problem with my 740. Replaced audio system and wiring...no fix. the learned it was caused by the rear window tint. Tint experts just cut the tint out in very small amounts and problem went away.

I had same problem on my E39 and never managed to fix it. When the same thing happened on my E60 while still in warranty I took it into the dealer. After cleaning contacts which did nothing, they eventually changed the rear window and the problem disappeared!
