Hi boys,
PLEASE HELP...... I HAVE A LATE 2003 530D. The turbo exploded so i had it reconned at "essex turbo's" . The turbo was fitted with a brand new actuator and machine balanced etc.
I entrusted a local garage who said they were bm specialists to do the swap. I drove the car away and it is flat as a pancake upto 3500 rpm, then it goes mad.
The guy at the garage said it is nothing to do with him (had a big argument) then decided to take car to some1 else who really is a specialist. (costing me ??????'s).
This guy has had a camera around the turbo and say's there is a leak between the turbo housing and manifold (possible crack in manifold )
Would this cause the problem that i am experiencing ?? and has any1 had a turbo from "essex turbo's" ?
This has been going on for 8 weeks now !!!! I'm losing faith in my pride and joy..... any idea's
DESPERATE DAVE.

Sorry to hear about the problem. Few questions come to mind.

So who was this guy who told about the possible leak? Was he from the shop who replaced the turbo or...?
I think that a leak could cause the problem yes. Did they check the intake manifold while changing the broken turbo; maybe the turbo spit something to the intake manifold when it "exploded"?

If there are leaks in the hoses between the turbo and intake manifold, I think they're relatively easy to fix. What about the new turbo itself? Are the specs the same as in the original? Is it appropriate for your car?

Sorry buddy but I belive the latter to be correct, the car has been wrongly diagnosed, or they missed the cracked manifold and your manifold is deffo the culprit!! I've seen this a few times myself!! I would report the first garage to fair tradings or at least tell them!!

Did they diagnose the original fault?

The turbo started groaning.... then black smoke minutes after. The turbo is the original 1 that has been re-conned.
It pulled like a train before this happened.
Thanks for reply's.

Hi Mate,
sorry to hear about your problem. I had my 530d turbo done by dealer whilst still under warranty. I dont think it was needing done cause it was just whining a bit. But cost over a grand so i wasnt complaining.
I now have a 535d and never use the dealers unless its warranty work and i even spent a lot of money on a gt1 diagnostics computer and head so i can avoid using them.
There are exceptions to the rule. When they fitted my turbo they cracked some plastic thingy and it was enough to cause the problems you are describing.
Sorry plastic thingy is not very helpful. If i were you i would get it into the dealer for diagnostics only. They will tell you what the problem is and it might cost you ?100. I have personally helped my mechanic fit an exhaust manifold to my 530d and its not a small job. What we did discover was the manifold cracked because of a missing bolt and weight being put on the manifold caused it to crack. Probably caused by the dealer not fitting it correctly.
If you were up in Scotland i could plug my machine in.
The slightest air leak on the turbo side will cause a massive reduction in power. My car went into limp mode and it was only because the plastic thing that goes onto the end of the turbo had a crack in it!

Get it booked in and they will tell you straight away what the problem is, then get it done somewhere else! oh they give your car a nice clean!!!

Good luck and keep us updated.
