How did you diagnose it with INPA? I found where I could watch the steering angle and stuff but that's it. When it has the malfunction the angle in degrees pegs out to some crazy #. I am sick of hearing "ding! ding! ding!" And seeing steering malfunction or failure to initialize!

Had this same issue and used the link that Kamil09m posted to clean the steering angle sensor and made sure it was calibrated. Did this last night and After clearing the code with impa I havent gotten the error again all day. Fingers crossed!

Open inpa> choose f4 (e60) > Functional Jobs > Errors > clear error memory.

good job guys. Let's weed out all of these Active Steering issues in the e60 and get the e60 the Rep it deserves!!! its a great car, just needs care, knowledge, and time. Sounds like the angle sensor was your issue. I wasn't so lucky, a new AFS module, and new steering rack later, I now have a normally functioning car again..... My rack started leaking fluid from the seals ;( and my module pooped out on communication with DSC..

For me ('04 545i) it was an internally broken wire to the active steering lock-out solenoid (or whatever you call it). That one was a bear to figure out, but determination paid off and no cost other than time expended.
