It is a dealer settable thing
The bulletin says that RDS is activated by CIP19.1, but dealers may turn it off if customers dont want it

With the introduction of CIP 12, RDS was coded off and could not be turned on again.
With the release of CIP 19.1, after the vehicle software is updated, RDS is now coded on as default.
If the customer does not wish to see these confusing RDS tags, then turn RDS off.
I suppose v19.01=v19.1

Mine was upgraded last week. The display now shows the name of the radio station instead of the dial number. However, I've noticed that the sound system go mute for 5 to 10 seconds every so often. Happens even when I'm playing a CD. More bugs in the software.

Great, looks like we have the same problem. At least I'm not alone. Back to the dealer but I'll wait a bit if I can stand it to let more people we this issue surface.

? What does RDS stand for??
I got my CIP upgraded last week and my SA specifically stated that I now have v19.1.1.? She said that's the latest version.

Thanks Rob525i. I just reprogrammed my radio presets yesterday but didn't notice any radio station information displayed. Either RDS is not working or I just didn't notice...I'll double check.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

What do you guys in the US call RDS ? Is it a different system from the one in Europe ? We have been using this "old" radio system for 15 years here and all the cars (incl. BMW) come with RDS perfectly working, even including traffic info system (TMC) now.
So what is the issue in the US ?

We've had RDS, Radio Data System, for just as long in the U.S. The problem is that BMW can't write software for iDrive to save its life. Their development and testing methodology is as bad, or no better, than that of the many software vendors I deal with at work.
