I have had this problem happen a few times recently. The info display that sits inbetween the tach and speedo starts off on its regular bright orange, then the brightness steps down until very dim and then back to full brightness.

this has only happened a few times and totally at random while driving. anyone else experience something similar?

thanks

Yes I've had it happen a few times before, it never became a problem... Maybe experienced it a handful of times for the 4 years I had the car.

mine did this before I retrofit the nav (and subsequently got a software update.) the brightness is controlled by the photocell on the cluster, it's a light colored dot. if that's blocked (either by shade or some foreign object) it will dim the cluster. I haven't seen it happen since July.

I think the brightness is also controlled by the solar position sensor (the thing that sticks up from the center speaker.) I've seen the display change from dim to bright repeatedly when driving on a road with bright street lights spaced about in a specific pattern...

makes sense. the photocell in the cluster is just to the left of approximately 1700rpm on my tach. perhaps it uses a combination of both readings like the rear view mirror does.
