Hey guys -

I have a recently purchased 2006 550i, and my oil message came on randomly yesterday. My iDrive says the oil has 4,000 miles on it, but I've only had the car for 1.5 months and ~1,000 miles, so I'm not sure when it was changed last.

I have an appointment to have it checked out by BMW next Monday (5 days).

The interesting thing is, twice now, after driving for about 30 minutes the iDrive oil level changes from "below minimum" to "O.K.".

I want to make sure the car is healthy, so I'm looking at buying 1 quart today and putting in about half. But should I leave it alone until Monday so that BMW can check the oil level and for any leaks? Or should I grab that 1 quart and fill 'er up? I'm sure they'd still be able to check for leaks, but it might not be as easy to check for a faulty sensor.

Any advice?

For peace of mind and to play it safe, I would go ahead and just change the oil and reset the counter. Who knows when it was really changed last.

How do you reset the counter yourself?

Basically, on my last oil change (just last weekend)...I bought my own oil and filter. I then took the car to an independent and paid $17 to change the oil and I did the reset myself. I could do it myself, but $17 isn't much and I won't have to worry about old oil disposal.

That's crazy! Good think warranty covered it considering the part is under $200 and looks like a simple DIY.

I get this problem at installing the JB4 tune but I'm also running higher boost. Pretty common problem. Getting a catch can so all that oil isn't going into my intake.
