I don't think there is a fault at all. I've had two 535's and the first one was new. Both did exactly the same. Near the time of the oil change the message would pop up. Now I change my oil mid point and I've never seen this message again. I also don't seem to get a warm fuzzy thinking about using that oil for 15000 miles! I know the volume is more and oil is better but I still just don't. I am sure you just didn't recently dump this qt, my thought is it's been a slow process from the last time it was changed.

Guys, this isn't the 60's. No lower mileage car is supposed to burn enough oil to need a refill in between scheduled changes. Sure, 200K miles may be a different story, even so, I still wouldn't buy 1 Qt per 1K miles. I have two N52 motors and neither need anything between oil changes.

The E60's do burn oil but not at the rate stated above. I checked my idrive and i have two bars above empty and i am due for an oil change in another 900 miles.

+1 If I go to the end without a midpoint change I will also have to add one qt just before the change. If you are burning one qt per 3000, hmmm, I would think someting is wrong.

I change the oil in my 545 every 8k, and it never needs a top-up between changes. It's done over 170k. That's provided it isn't currently leaking any oil, which it often does. Bastard leaks like a sieve.

You've done all you can by keeping the oil fresh so your rings and valve seals stay in excellent condition, as well as keeping gaskets in optimum health (oil where the additives have been used up becomes acidic and attacks gaskets making them brittle). But unfortunately we can't totally offset such a terrible gasket design on the N62 4.4L engine.

Example - The hole under the alternator bracket, originally designed for an oil cooler. To cheap out, they design a horrible profile gasket into the alternator bracket to plug the hole. Come on BMW - how could you cheap out so badly. Redesign the engine casting or put in a seal plug, but why torture us with such a poor gasket that is so difficult (read expensive) to change.

Great driving cars but seemingly so little effort given to reliability/quality. I once saw a list of 20 common failure on 545s. I think I or the previous owner had experienced 18 out of 20. That kind of consistency in failure is something they should be ashamed of.

no motor, even a worn out 350, shouldn't burn 1 quart per 1k miles. either way, i'll be taking my car to the dealer as soon as i get a chance.

In my experience a full quart is a lot of oil to just dissapear out of the blue. I havent seen any smoke or had any other signs that i could be burning oil. Is this common in the 535i? I have since added a quart and the control message went away but i am curious to know where the oil went. No leaks either, i lifted my car, took off the bottom plastic covers and looked methodically. Any ideas?
Happened once in the car's 2 or 3 year. Tech said not to worry.
