I guess I was not clear. It is a very simple system to use. What I meant was that why have a rain sensing device in the windshield? Having a device that senses how much rain is on my windshield is more complicated then it needs to be. The advantage of manual intermittent is that I control how often the wipers move.
If the auto wipers worked as they were intended to, they can be very helpful in long freeway drives. For example, I drove for 4 hours straight in a huge thunderstorm, and I rarely had to touch the wiper settings. Sure, they wiped a little too freq for my tastes, but it was better than constantly adjusting the rate. Its also supposed to take your mind off one more control while driving, this is great when passing a semi in the rain, and you dont have to think about hitting the wiper speed to cope with the added water spash. These are a few times where I appreciated the auto.

The one time I did use them they were nice when I passed a truck. I just don't like when they wipe and there is very little rain on the window.
