How many of you can honestly say that BMW has always had reliable engines that just got developed...remember the old days when the m54 was first used...there were recalls and repairs galore. Remember the m3 engines over-reving and blowing...just a couple thing to ponder about fot those of you whining about 255hp. Just wait til Dec '06, when this form gets hit with..."my car is at the dealer again..."

I think that BMW has very reliable engines, not withstanding that ///M3 engine, remember, the M engines rev up in the 8000+rpm range, so they will take a beating

the new R6 is already in production in the 630i since Sept, so by the time its here it will be out for about 8 months

I certainly hope this won't be the case and instead you'll be hearing how great the R6 530 is. But I guess only time shall tell.

I would not go for R6, not much torque increase. 545i is the way to go.

Well, while the peak torque hasn't really gone up any, a quick look at the HP/Torque curve shows that the new R6 3.0L powerplant achieves it's peak torque at ~2200RPM; a full 1000RPM sooner than the outgoing 3.0L powerplant (S54, maybe?), and it's basically flat all the way to around 6000RPM. That's a real improvement, IMO. Also, the new motor has a 7000RPM redline, which is 500RPM more than the outgoing motor.

The 300nm does kick in 1000rpm lower which does make a big difference.

Nah, THey're not building a new engine from the ground up, they're just replacing most of the parts with magnesium (or so I heard)

In that case, we'll see and wait for the improvement and reliability, then we'll have a diy for performance upgrades if possible

well maybe not from the ground up but this new inline 6 has an electric water pump and valvetronic control so it has to be modified significantly

So I think you've heard wrong... I think BMW did build a new engine... see here

"Further development conceivable but inefficient.
Consequently, the previous engine would have been an ideal candidate for further evolutionary development, which had happened consistently and through which the BMW basic power unit had achieved its cult status and its pole position in the market.
However, BMW customer demands on a new engine, ambitious objectives in regard to performance and the reduction of fuel consumption, as well as standards set by BMW engineers in innovative engine construction were reason enough for an entirely new concept ? the R6. This decision is impressively underlined by the specifications of the redeveloped power unit. An upgrade of the existing unit according to state-of-the-art technical specifications would have resulted, inter alia, in the engine being 14 kg heavier. After several technical modifications to the M54, which consistently increased performance, bringing about a drop in fuel consumption at the same time, the demands of the future could only be fulfilled by implementing fundamentally new concepts offering a high technological potential. It then became evident that the new engine had to be radically modified, leaving only the principle of an inline six-cylinder arrangement unchanged."

More than you ever want to read about the R6 engine...
