First question: why is the 545i at 3803 pounds so much heavier than the 530i at 3472? It doesn't seem like the bigger engine should weigh 325 pounds more.

Second question: why does the manual tranny only decrease the weight by 11 pounds on the 545i and 18 on the 530i? I was under the impression that an automatic was quite a bit heavier than a manual. Thanks, JJ.

The weight difference between the 545 and 530 is mostly due to the engine. This difference will allow the 530 to be more tossable around the corners.

If you compare the M5 to the 545, there is a number of differences, but again, the main difference in weight is due to the engine. I believe the M5 is upwards of 4000lbs.

Not sure about the 2nd question though.

Also, I'd add the weight of stiffer springs, bigger brakes, bigger tires (esp sport)and more fluids capacities from coolants, oil, and etc.

Does the sports package differ between the models?

Yeah, the bigger rear tires on the 545i.

The gearbox is likely to be beefier in the 545 to handle the greater torque and power.

Actually, in both cars the engines are only marginally heavier. The main difference is in the heavier drivetrains and suspension components necessary to withstand the added torque of the engine, and the higher speeds and heavier weights. It's all additive.

If you increase the engine torque, you need heavier clutch, transmission, driveshaft, differential, and axles. Now you need larger brakes to stop the heavier car, which adds weight, and now you need heavier springs, shocks and A-arms because the unsprung weight is heavier as well. You need heavier gage exhaust, more piping, extra converters... It all adds up pretty quickly.

Good to know. I always thought the bulk of the difference was due to the engine though.

The official weight difference between the 545i engine and the new 530i N52 engine isabout 66 pounds

The difference between the 2 auto transmissions is sbout 22 pounds

The first exhaust catalysts weight difference is about 9 pounds

So as you can see the differences start to add up

66 lbs different? Are you sure, man? Well, maybe you're right because 530i has I6, not V6 which would be much lighter.
