Good day all,

I just crashed my 2001 E39 and so i am in the market for a 2004 and above 530i or 545i. I have some questions about the E60 530i, was the M54B30 engine offered in the states? and what manufacture month in 2004? Also please how can i tell the difference between an E60 with the M54B30 engine versus the N52B30 engine which is the engine i want? For bluetooth functionality, do all E60 just need a software update from the dealership or is there a particular month build that has this option?

Thanks for all the help.

From the inside, cars with the N52 engine was introduced around the same time as the start button. So 530i cars with start button will have an N52 Engine.

Under the bonnet:

As for Bluetooth, it is an option. You either have it or you don't. Retrofitting would be prohebitively expensive, so if you must have Bluetooth make sure you buy a car with the option specified. In the UK the Bluetooth is part of the Media package (CD changer, Sat Nav professional, & Bluetooth) also from MY2007 the media package includes extended voice control.

Hope this helps

are you wanting the older engine, its more open to mods and upgrades due to the long run of the engine. thanks

Sorry about your E39. I had both the M54 and the N52 engines. The M54 is a brilliant engine but it has reached the limit on how much more power BMW can squeeze reliably from the engine. Thus they introduced the N52 engine. The basic difference between the two engines is the use of magnesium aloy block and the use of Valvetronic which eliminated the throttle batterflys allowing the engine to be more responsive and rev higher.

One word of caution though; if you ever want to use a turbo, N52 may not be the best engine for this. There is also a rumor that BMW will introduce N53 next year to replace the N52. All in all you will be happy with the 3.0 N52. Here is a link with some info about the N52.

To your second question; all US E60 manufactured after 3/2005 have Bluetooth along with Assist without the need for a software upgade.

Good luck with your search.

Sorry, should said MOST cars with N52 engine would have a start button. They were introduced around the same time, but it is possible some very early N52 cars (probably manufactured late 2005) did not get the start button.

If not mistaken the N52 went on from MY 03/05 and the start button from 09/05. So yes there are E60s with N52 and no start button.

Here we go again with the US and EU MY differances.

The new N52 engines came in 3/05 for the US MY 06 but start/stop buttom only at 9/05 for the EU MY 06.
Of course the US got also the "buttom" from that fabrication date.

Now with the LCI (facelift) the EU consumers can order the new N53 530i but US the only ol' N52 528i.

But then, the N54 535i is not availbale in EU.
