Question related to iDrive airconditioning setting

What is the damn point of this setting? Why must I preselect whether I want neutral, warm or cold air coming from the vents in the idrive menu when I would just love to be able to simply use the thermostat which should automatically select cold air as I dial the temp lower and the opposite as I dial the temp higher?

Why this two-setting nonsense? So aggravated? What am I missing?

No. I want the knob that already exists and that purports to be an "automatic" thermostat dial to AUTOMATICALLY vary the temperature of the air coming out of the vents in response to the degree setting I have chosen.

Like my old Z4's knob. Like my old CLK's knob.

Soooooooo, if the darn idrive setting is three bars blue, and it happens to be a cold day and I turn the knob to say, 78 degrees to warm up, I have to press buttons and move the idrive knob to change from blue bars to red.

Well, I think you get the idea by now.

Check pp 5,7, and 8 of this technical description of how the IHKA (A/C sytem and controls) functions. It talks about stratification/layering of the air temp coming out of the vents.
I can't seem to get my head around the whole process, but, I think the air temp is different from various vents to compensate for cold air settling and hot air rising.
The climate control knobs set the temperature and the iDrive setting over compensates if you want colder/warmer air at your upper body.
My owners manual, pp 106 and 107, describe "Adjusting temp in upper body region" with the iDrive.
It's been freakin hot here so I set mine on BLIZZARD.

No... pretty sure they weren't joking. This secondary setting replicates what a good 'ol manual dial did on my E39 and still does on my X3, it adjusts the relative temp of the air coming from the centre vents (the ones that hit you in the hands/chest).

This weekend while driving along the highway in the prairie heat for a long-ish period, the A/C from the centre vents was uncomfortably cold on my hands/chest, so I adjusted this setting to only a couple of blue bars instead of the max setting. The air from these vents moderated to a comfortable setting, but the car continued to cool through the other vents to the set temperatures on the dials (for driver/passenger). While I haven't driven my 550 through our harsh winter yet, I'm betting I'll have to do the opposite in the winter to avoid being blasted in the chest with hot air while the poor car attempts to heat up from -40. I am sure of one thing however... I'm going to miss my heated steering wheel this winter (or have to pony up for the 2009 heated m-sport wheel!).
