I was wondering if anyone has come across a comparison between the GPS tracking for the unit in the cars vs. the ones that you can buy for your PDA etc. The PDA ones have the new Xtrac v2 option, which uses some kind of algorithm to figure out your location even in very low signal areas, such as underground and stuff. Does the gps for our cars do something similar?

Just curious!

As an aside, can you add a HUD to a 2005 545i later on if you didnt order it as an option?

You can but it's so expensive as to not make it worth while.

The BMW Nav also continues to calculate even while going through tunnels, etc. It did this for many minutes when we drove underground in Paris this summer after picking up the car in Munich (ED).

But there are some other great features for it being built in that go beyond that. First, the display on the built in unit has a home in the dash, and the antenna is on the roof where it gets ideal exposure to the signals.

But with NAV you also get voice out and in, meaning you can say; 'MAP' and the map shows on the screen, or CD and the CD controls show on the screen, or FM Ninety point 5 and the station will change.

Also, the 'out' voice will give you directions and you don't have to look at anything.

There is more, but that is what comes to mind at the moment.

I hope that the underground reception is decent. I always lose my GPS signal (for my PDA) when i enter tunnels and go under bridges!

From what I heard the handhelt version is OK if you're used to reading maps. That will make it an improvement. If you have had a built in system it will annoy you no end, as it is slower and less accurate, partly do to the odometre link.

I think what you mean is t6he HUD retrofit...!?
In a thread where someone asked if a HUD retrofit is possible I said, yes, but waaaay too expensive, since you'd need to replace the windshield, dashboard and software...!??
