I'm down for some 0 to 60 mph and 1/4 mile runs at a future meet, space willing of course!
I had forgotten about your sleeper car. Why not get a meter and join us on the g-meter testing thread? It would be great to have you there--with another manual.

Thnx for all the great info guys. I guess its STEP>SMG/MT huh.
It looks that way.History has taught us that manual is always faster than automatic(due to higher loss's in the automatic)but to date neither magazines or owners have been able to beat the step times. It may have something to do with drivers, but getting the best from the steps also requires time & skill to develope the best method.

Since i only recently joined the forum ... how much of a sleeper car does he have? The e60 being so new I cannot find much aftermarket items for the it (unless it was all custom-made) ...

Check out Dinan.com for aftermarket parts except that Dinan's programming is not yet available. There are others too--e.g., B&B for mufflers. 530iii does not have any mods. His car is a sleeper because it is a "stripper" with a 6 speed. Thus, he has what ought to be a superior tranny for performance and does not have any extra weight that might be attributable to the sports package, the equivalent of the premium package, comfort seats, etc., etc.

I think Znod alluded to this in an earlier post on gear ratio but did not supply specifics. This applies to both 545 as well as 550.

The final drive in SMG/Manual = 2.93
The final drive in Step = 3.38

First gear in SMG/Manual = 4.05
First gear in Step = 4.17

2nd gear in SMG/Manual = 2.4
2nd gear in Step = 2.34

Total ratio:
1st in SMG/Manual = 11.87
1st in Step = 14.09

2nd in SMG/Manual = 7.03
2nd in Step = 7.91

Each will get to 60 MPH in 2nd gear but you are getting into the power band quicker in the case of the Step. So there is an offset (tradeoff) to the slower shift in the Step and torque converter losses.

The Step gains in the economy area as both 5th (0.87) and 6th (0.69) are OD ratios while only 6th (0.87) in the SMG/Manual is an OD ratio.

Humm since the final drive gear in manual is smller than step doesnt that mean the manuals rpm should be lower than the step at the same speed? Thus giving better economy in 6th? OR am I over simplifying things?
