No way theres not "all the advantages" theres like one... straight line acceleration and thats it, and thats a maybe... Actually to be honest I think if you use Acceleration Assist on the SMG you can bet a better time than the Steptronics but i wouldnt want to beat on the clutch at every stop light... like how you can on a step...
Why the SMG? Cuz you get much better control especially on twisties and in turns. I think the shifts are faster and better even in regular driving mode than the step, it doesnt always upshift to the highest gear, you get crisps shifts with SMG, none of this sloppy lazy shifts that the steptronic does... Its personal preference... I much prefer the manual feeling of a shift with SMG.
With the steptronic even if you slap it over in manual mode the shifts are still not crisps... theres still the torque converter lag/feeling...

Znod - thanks for being kind....the driver and the car are learning
At what RPM are you holding the motor for your launches? (I'm also assuming that you're dropping the clutch, that is, quickly pulling off your left foot from the clutch pedal once you've got the motor at the desired RPM).

Also another personal question: i see you have the style 101 rims. If i'm not mistaken you purchased those rims recently (in the last few months), you even started a thread about this (weight saving). The question is related with weight savings: do you know by any chance if style 101 rims are the lightest or one of the lightest oem rims? The reason i'm asking this is because i want to buy some 19s but don't know exactly what to choose from: 166 style, bbs rxII or 101 style. I like the design on all, almost the same, but how about the weight difference? Thanx.
PS: a hint for me is the fact that 101s are 2 pice rims.

I have varied RPM's from 500 to 2000. Best result so far seems to be in 1000 to 1500 range. The ambient temp seems to have an impact, as the colder the temp the more wheel spin I am getting. I am hoping to get some testing this weekend in the 50F range!
Thanks and hope to hear your results.

1/4mile enough??
Sure, with you and YOUR car why not?
Seriously i'd like to dispel the hype once and for all!
How about it NY/NJ/CT guys? We can have the steptronic vs. SMG vs. 6spd manual be it 525i/530i/545i/or 550i... losers buy a pizza pie!
