Hey guys Iv been reading a couple magazines on the specs of the 545i and it states that the steptronic runs 0-60 in 5.3s and does the 1/4 with a time of 13.7

NOW, my question is that is the steptronic (AUTO) tranny the fastest? Is the SMG faster than the step or what about the manual? I cant seem to find any info on this. I am mostly concerned about the time of the SMG vs. AUTO. I want to know which one is faster.

Thanks.

Here are the significant US data of which I am aware.

BMW 545i--Manual CD 5/04 5.5 14.1 102.8
BMW 545i--Steptronic RT 6/05 3814 5.2 13.7 104.0
BMW 545i--Steptronic MT 8/04 5.4 13.7 102.1
BMW 545i--Steptronic MT11/05 5.5 13.8 102.8

The SMG and the manual are supposed to be a tick faster that the Step, but that has yet to be demonstrated. The best times that have been reported on this forum, from g-meter testing, have be turned by 2 Steps. One SMG and one manual have reported slower times to date.

SMG and manual are faster.
That hasn't been borne out by any tests I've seen to date. I suspect it's pretty close either way.

That's news to me....i though the steptronic to be much slower but it seems it is as fast as a manual or smg or in some cases faster... Of course those are tests made in different conditions and stuff but damn you have to addmit that the steptronic holds up incredibly well. Really didn't expect that.
Znod btw do you have similar times with the 535d? I'd like to compare it to those times. Thank you.

It is quite opposite. In real life situations step is usually faster. Not many owners are willing and able to push their 6-speeds. It also looks like 545 acceleration is traction not performance limited. Less power to the wheels becomes advantageous.

Relative...imo. It depends but a skilled driver should get better times with manual than with steptronic don't you think? And also vs a smg wich in theory has faster gearchanges. Yes 545 may be traction limited but why do you think there is less or more traction in other gearbox set-ups?
