My Ride: 2007 550i, Titanium Silver/Black, 6-Sp Steptronic, Sport Package, HD Radio, Sirius, Premium Sound, GPS Nav, Cold Pkg, cell phone cradle, iPod through the AUX port 1976 Datsun 280Z, Charcoal/Black, 5-Sp Manual, A/C, American Mags, CD, Tom Tom 930 GPS (works better than the BMW!) and the rest is pretty much stock

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I'm taking my 550i to the strip this Sunday to see what kind of time I can get out of her. First time at a sanctioned race course - I'll admit right here that I don't know s#!t. I'm not serious about drag racing my ride - I just want to have some fun and it's also a date with a new girl (who rides a Harley).

In reading the rules if I can turn a 14 ET or better I have to wear a helmet. If slower that 14, I don't need one and I can take my date in the car for the races. Now, the first question is - what kind of time can I expect to see, roughly? Second is will I get the same or better traction at the lights than on bare asphalt or concrete? The car is totally stock, nothing but the sport package. Any advice from you old drag racers would be much appreciated! I'll post my times next week....and a picture of her Harley!

The 550 will do about 13.3 to 13.6 stock. with minimal gas and empty trunk. with 2 people you'll still probably break the 14sec mark.

If you really want to not wear a helmet and want to take her in the car then when you hit about 95mph just lift off the gas. that'll cause your time for the 1/4 to be over 14sec but you'll still be able to see what your 0 to 60 is.

Theres several threads on the board that will give you a good idea about what the 550 is capable of doing stock.

As for you other questions I'll let someone else chime in.

Thanks - exactly what I was looking for. Wouldn't mind hearing your opinion about traction in the start area.

I just ran my 545 on 10-27 at maplegrove near reading,pa.Ran a best of 13.644 @ 103.22.You may have some traction problems at the start line.I would go through the water area and do a burn out to heat up and clean your tires.Nothing fancy just enough to clean and heat the rubber a little.I would try with DTC/DTS disabled.I found the traction at the starting line to be not as good as the road I do my testing on.I start in DS and hold the brake and throttle up to about 1000 rpm.Let brake go and push gas to the floor, let the trans shift itself at redline.Let us know how you make out.

I'm gonna die laughing if geokr1 gets a better 1/4 mile time than brian1225.

FYI, brian1225 is part of a group of e60 owners in Socal that gets together to do (0 - 60) and 1/4 mile times occassionally as well as EBMCS03. Brian1225 hasn't cracked sub 14's yet. It's because his launches suck.

geokr1,
Pay real close attention to the sage advice that grogan545 is giving you. He knows his stuff!

I concur. I did a search and read a lot of his time trial posts - great stuff. And if I ever get back to San Diego again (why the hell did I ever leave!) we'll have to get together for some SoCal racing. You guys out west don't know what's it like to try to run on two-lane country roads channeled through the trees where you can't see 500 ft ahead of you. Got to tell you that the droppings from horse-propelled Amish buggies can really mess up the traction on curves. Miss those wide open spaces.

Oops... I meant to say sub 14s not 13s! Crack sub 13s and he would be in M5 and E55 territory.

Horse poopy all over the tires? Blah....

I actually do know what it's like driving the roads you've described. I used to live in Delaware for the longest time. Just last year I was living in Virgina on assignment. Be safe driving them country roads.

I do not think one should do burnouts with non-slicks. Road tries are designed to dissipate heat. DTS/DTC should be disabled for sure. I also would rev it a little higher. Right up to the moment wheels start turning. 2,000 RPM?

That's interesting you should say go through the water and do a burn out, all the car magazines say to drive around it if you have street tires. It stays in the tread and will drip down on the starting line and you'll just spin.

EDIT: I just found this site that also suggests not using water on street tires, they also say to ditch low profile rubber.
