Dont even think about it !
A friend of mine accidently filled his Lexus LS with diesel instead of petrol and blew his exhaust and some other parts the second he cranked the engine.

Better that than putting petrol in a diesel tank.
Follow the advice on dilution and I doubt you'll have any issues.

In the early 50s I routinely blended JP4 with gasoline in my Cushman motor scooter. The engine popped and snorted but worked OK.

It happens very often, that a Diesel is filled up with Petrol.
As long as the engine isn't started, nothing happens.
Just drain the tank COMPLETELY, plus all fuel lines, and fill it up with Diesel.
If the engine was started you CAN be lucky and the above works just fine for you too.
But if the engine died because it was filled up with Petrol instead of Diesel you need to replace the fuel pump.
On a Petrol car things are different.
If you fill Diesel in a Petrol and start the engine...
A LOT of work needs to be done to clean out the entire engine.
Because it is much more work to do on a Petrol that got filled up with Diesel, the Diesel nozzle is a little bigger, so it won't fit in the Petrol tank.
In case it is only a Gallon and you fill up completely with Petrol after the Gallon...
Your car will work, but it is definately not good for the engine.
You can't see it, but you can feel it. And once you look inside you can see that the Diesel that was burned left its marks in your engine.
So, whatever you filled in your tank...
As long as it isn't the fuel your car needs = seek immediate assistance!
When I'm on the towtruck I see it every day!
Mostly it's Diesel cars filled up with Petrol.
