Let's assume the coolant system had 50/50 mix. An automatic transmission N52 has 10 liters. Let's say the reservoir holds one liter. If you has a dry reservoir and added only water, you now have 45% coolant and 55% water. That just isn't that much and should have very little impact on the boiling point. It will have a greater impact on the freezing temperature, but still not a problem for where you live. If you really want to empty the reservoir, go ahead and put in just pure coolant.

Remember race cars used only water for better heat-removal performance. Any over-heating is certainly not due to too much water percentage. We can't run pure water because of water pump lubrication and corrosion protection needs, as has already been said.

Yes you guys were right, my car was diagnosed with water pump failure and will need replacement + thermostat. My indy quoted me $873 which i think is a steal. Never happy to shell out a thousand bucks but I guess I was over-due

My Ride: 2008 535i LCI with sports/premium package, Sports trans with paddle shifters, CF emblems, JB4 Software, Dinan Exhaust, Navigation, M5Tech body kit, Carbon wrap interrior trim and CIC Controller.
You said about six months ago the water pump was replaced. Who did this and was there not a warranty? I'm not sure from the indy side since warranties can vary. But damn, six months seems too quick to fail again!

I think only the thermostat is bad. OP did said he depressed the gas pedal, tested the water pump and heard it running. Not all mechanics know what they are talking about until they replaced enough irrelevant parts. lol
