I've been looking at the forums and car for quite some time but now i found a 530xi that i'm thinking about picking up today. I'm wondering if I should pick this up as it's pretty much fully loaded with premium, sport, and cold weather package and comes with AT for a pretty good price.

Now i'm debating if I should get this one with AT or look for another with Manual Transmission. What do you guys think?

Get auto, cause when you are stuck in traffic, you'll be cursing that darn clutch. Also, it'll free your hand to do other important stuff while driving.

IMHO.....If you felt the need to ask, you probably will be ok with the auto tranny.

Quite happy in my manual. It's easier to drive in traffic than my wife's X3.

Ahhh good thinking! I've come across that quite a few times.

I'm pretty new to this board but i've been a bimmer guy for quite some time. I recently sold my 2k1 e46 M3 carbon black rolling on pretty much the first sold DPE's GT-7 19" rims in the US and PSS9s. But now it's time to move up to the 5-Series and thanks for the tips i'll probably be picking up the car today or this weekend and am excited to join e60 forums!

Now all I need is to re-research is the easter egg hunt, tint windows, rims/tires (probably DPE 20" with Toyo T1R's), V1 Stealth Mounting, Suspension, ... LoL

I used to drive a manual for 10 years. When traffic started to get worse, the MT became a burden. Go with AT if you are getting tired of sitting in traffic and constantly shifting.

You want to feel the car and the road - get manual. Yes in traffic its a hassle but the rest of the time, nothing like a good downshift.

Inference here is that maybe the driving style and enjoyment factor aren't such so as to truly appreciate the manual transmission in a 5er. I had to struggle with this issue when I placed my order a few weeks ago. For reference I've always driven manuals, starting with a Mustang 289, then a Capri 2L, then the 533i I've put 200K on thus far. My work truck is an MT as well. The enjoyment of total control and performance of the MT is unsurpassed. Yet, as I thought about the traffic factor a little, but more importantly the progress of the new ATs with full lock-up of the TC and many other advancements, and after test driving a few, I decided to take a chance on the Sport Automatic. I was persuaded by many enthusiasts on this site who seem to have made the transition from MT to AT positively. Hope I'm not disappointed.

No offense - I promise - but I always get confused by this question.

I'm an unrepentant manual guy. It's just my thing. I don't even think about automatics.

And driving a manual vs an automatic is so fundamentally different, that to me chosing one 5er with vs another without is like choosing between going to the Caribbean on holiday or eating brocolli for dinner. I like brocolli. I just don't think of it as an alternative to the beach.
