Here's my take on the subject:
Top button: Telephone List.
Bottom button: Next Entertainment Source.
On extended nighttime highway trips, I will swap telephone list for the one that turns off the screen so I can quickly toggle it on and off as needed.
For me, programming the mute feature wastes a button since I can use the dashboard knob to mute without using my eyes. I don't use the nav voice so I have no need to program that one either.

The menu button brings it back and puts you on the startup screen.
