So the buyer is in Toronto Canada. We made a deal to sell the car for $16,000. I googled him and found his name and where he works. We will exchange photo ID by email. He needs the car by March 1st. He won't have a car to drive after March 1st. I am going to Montreal next week from 21st to 25th of Feb on vacation. This my first time selling a car.
He needs me the send these documents by email:
Bill of sale
Title with lien (original title with lien)
Lien release
Copy of my ID
Service history of the car to show that there's no outstanding recalls
Payment info (Wire transfer)
My checking account number and routing.
He then needs to submit these documents to the border 72 hours prior to the car arriving to the border
Once he gets these documents gets submitted to the border. 72 hours or more. The truck to pickup the car will arrive at my friend's shop. (I'll be away at Montreal on vacation) He will then wire me the money. I check if the money goes into my account. I'll then call my friend and let them load the truck with my car. I'll have my sister mail the original title with lien release, bill of sale.
So my questions are.
Does this seem right?
Is there any way of getting scammed on this procedure?
Is there anything I'm missing to make this a smooth transaction?
What else do I need to get this car exported/imported into Canada?

I have 2 suggestions if you have concern (and you should)... Contact DMV, a Canadian Motor Vehicle Dept and the Feds about a transfer over the border... you may even be able to find out online.

Ya,
I'm from Toronto and it's very common for us to buy cars from the states
I agree you have to becareful with fraud and stuff..
2 main reasons we buy from the states:
1. The dollar (as mentioned before) - After boarder taxes/duties to brin the car across the boarder we would probably save $5,000-$10,000 on a car worth approx $25,000-$30,000 CDN.
2. Our cars here go through winter and salt and eventually get rust.. Cars from Cali tend to get nothing but sunshine.. Lucky people living SoCal
lol
