Most of the cars I have owned have been manual trans, including my 06 530xi. So my 08 535xi auto is in the shop and they gave me a 335xi auto as a loaner. As I was driving it, I was using the manual shift feature and enjoyed it. I have tried this on the 535 and never really liked it. And now I know why.
The shift lever on the 335, because it is the old style, moves back about 3 inches when in drive so as my elbow rests on the center console the shifter is in my palm. In the 535, with the electric auto, the shift lever stays in more of a neutral position.
Anyone understand what I mean? I can not believe I never figured this out before.

Yeah that is confusing.
When the 535 is in drive the shift lever is to far forward to rest you hand on. You have to reach for it to change gears.
In the 335, the gear shift lever is further back and rests confortably under the palm of my hand.
Make sense yet?

I think the armrest re-positioning suggestion by DominikB could work.

I retrofitted my XI w/ SMG paddle shifter on the steering wheel
... so I do manual shift all the time from the steering wheel never from the shifter stick ... way much more enjoyable.

Tried that - the problem is it only locks all the out or all the way in. A comfortable location for me is in between.
