How many of you E60er's drive around on a "topped off" full tank of gas only as opposed to half full or a 1/4 full?

In the spring/summer i wait until the low fuel warning to fill her up all the way.

Would the amount of gas one has in the tank or having the A/C on have a "real" effect on acceleration/handling?

I usually keep my car "topped off." The lowest my gas has been so far is about 2/5 full. I wouldn't suggest you waiting until you get the low fuel warning.

I usually wait till the low fuel indicator comes on. It indicates about 50 miles till you are out of luck.

Only one time have I been in fear of not making it to a petrol station. That was in Germany when the car was new to me and I did not know how reliable the gauge was and I was in the middle of who knows where. Luckly the NAV had the closest station, about 17km in the other direction.

But to the point, based on my onboard mileage and the amount I put in on fill up I am reasonably confident the guage is accurate and empty does not come upon you suddenly.

On a 545 the amount of fuel or the AC being on is not perceptible in performace.

I usually wait for the second low fuel warning which goes off at around 30mls left

Hell I just had it go down to 2mls before I topped it off earlier tonight ;p

I only keep mine half full unless I'm going on a long distance drive when I fill her up. Driving round with a full tank has got to affect the mpg and performance slightly.

Does anyone know the actual stats for a/c? Some people say it has now effect on mpg some say its around 2/3mpg less!

Anyone really know?

This might sound a little crazy but (call me lazy) i've had my gas tank go alll the way till i see 3 dashes (---)

Once i had the car in --- dashes and could not find a gas station for a while (about 5 - 7 miles or so.....but have never waited that long after that. I usually fill it up when it shows the 20 or 15 mile mark. I think BMW is smart in the sense that you still have 20 miles of fuel in your gas tank even after your 3 dashes appear.

I think having the A/C on degrates the power on a small percentage....but i stand corrected
