Had a thought today when I noticed a pre-lci 5 series in my rear view mirror which had it's drl's on.
Is it possible or has anyone tried to hook up a manual toggle switch to the lights so they can be turned on/ off manually? Seems like it should be pretty straight forward.....tap into the drl wiring at the back of the sockets, run wire to relay, then run wire from the relay to the "cockpit" to a toggle switch that can be hidden somewhere. Will it work?

Or get the dealer to turn them on via programming.

That kinda defeats the purpose of being able to turn them on/ off "manually" when wanted, vs being stuck with them on. My thought was IF I wanted to use the drls during the day, I could turn them on.....then if i wanted to just have the parking lights on at dusk, then that option would be there as well.
I had the dealer turn them on shortly after I bought the car....then found out that they stayed anytime except when the headlights were on...so I went back a few days later and had them turn them off.

I'm confused. What is the point of manual DRL? Manually switching on/off low beams would give the same result, wouldn't it. And you can still use the parking lights at dusk if you want.

mmmmm, well..... low beams are outer xenon bulbs.....drls are inner low voltage bulbs, so no not the same result

I really don't know why BMW didn't allow you guys in the US to turn DRL on/off via your iDrive. We've always had the option and hence never thought of this mod.

Yeah, the option appeared in my iDrive when my car was updated to the August 10 2006 software. I dont use the option as prefer to leave my lights on Auto, its pretty neat when you go into a tunnel or car park .

I would love to find a way to switch my day lights to the angel lights instead like the new E60's (2007 and on). I asked the dealer if they could program it but they said it cannot be done.

something tells me that if you put a switch in for the DRLs, it'll throw some error codes, but I'm just guessing here. If I'm wrong in my assumption, I'd actually do this mod... although, the updated software might be a cleaner way to go about the same thing...
