Started my car last night and heard a loud bang.

Opened the hood; belts were shredded in a cute little ball and power steering pump was hanging on one bolt.

The pump looks ok, but the housing is completely broken (snapped off). At minimum, I'm looking at some belts, p/s fluid, and unfortunately a pump.

Called BMW this morning and got quoted 1935.15 CAD for the pump alone. (dynamic + active steering)

No warranty left on car

I'm having trouble finding an aftermarket part replacement. Is there one?

My production date is 12/03. Part Number is LH676724302B.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

It sounds like the pump internals are probably ok.

I think your only lower cost choices will be to get one from a salvage yard (junk yard) or maybe you can take the broken bracket piece to a machine shop and get the it welded back on to the pump or fashion a new bracket.

Power Steering pump is not typically the kind of thing you can get in the aftermarket.

Thanks for the response.

I tried the wreckers already, nothing available

I also thought about welding, but to my understanding its made of an aluminum type of material... dont think a weld won't hold on that, correct me if im wrong...

I believe it is possible to weld aluminum, though you need a special welding machine, and someone trained to do it.

A competant machine shop should be able to weld it back. You would be surprised at how many things can be fixed. It would cost you 1/10 of the cost of a new pump.

Yea, didn't know if this was aluminum - not surprised. That makes it more difficult. But, it is doable.

I'm not saying you should do this, but if it was me...I would remove the pump and the broken off part and take it to a machine shop and see what they have to say. You don't have anything to lose and even if they attempt the weld, it may just be $50. Heck, they may not even charge you unless they are successful. You probably want to plug up any fluid hoses with old rags.

Thanks guys for all the advice.

I actually found a guy selling a used pump for $400. l have some reservation about purchasing a used item, but for the cost I find myself compelled to consider this approach.

I will also look into finding a good machine shop here...Should have word sometime this afternoon...

What is everyone's thoughts on purchasing a used pump?

I love Rockauto. But, I don't think this is the right pump. A1 Cardone web site says this for the 2004 545i:
http://www.cardone.com/English/club/member...PARTNUM=21-249#

Click on "Detailed Applications" at the bottom.

That also matches pretty closely this:

I would be ok with a used pump as long as all the lines have been connected and fluid was still in the system while it has been sitting around. If it has been sitting outside with lines disconnected or fluid drained, that's a problem. If it has been sitting on a shelf not exposed to the weather, how long? A few weeks on the shelf is probably ok. A few years and the seals are probably dried out.
