Is it possible for someone swapped my 550i 4.8L with 4.4L engine?

Hi I have 550i 2007. I have it since 2009 and not familiar with under the hood.

around 2013 the 550i was in an auto repair shop for 2 weeks.

July 2013, the smog test passed and the report said 550i 4.8L

Later the 550i went to another shop to be repaired for 10 days.

Today I send it to smog check, the technician came back to waiting room, ask me Is this original engine? I said it is and it is 4.8L. But he insisted to me: IT IS 4.4L

I can not located stamped engine number to match the VIN last 6 number.

And I don't know if it is possible to put 4.4L on 550i?

Any idea?

Thanks

So was this a dealer technician or some regular smog shop guy? If it's the regular dude, I wouldn't worry about it. Many people don't know what they're talking about when it comes to these car. I had to argue with firestone when they were mounting tires for me, they insisted I had tpms and needed new ones because that's what the computer said. No '06s came with tpms, afaik.

Anyway the parts necessary to swap in the 4.4 is probably more than it would cost to just get another 4.8. I have no idea where the vin is on the engine tho, sorry.

Here is where the engine identification stamping is located:
BMW Workshop Manuals > 7 Series E66 745Li (N62) SAL > 2 Repair Instructions > 11 Engine (N62) > 0 Engine, General > 8 RA Engine Identification > Page 311

This. Back at my old shop (we're talking early 2000s) I had a smog guy call me about an E46 I sent up to get checked after we did some work to. He was asking me about the car, since he had never seen an E46 with a 5 liter engine in it. Of course, I knew he was wrong since I had worked on the car and it most definitely had a bone stock M52 in it. I asked him what made him think it had a 5 liter motor in it, and he said "It says it right on the engine!! 5.0L!!!"

I got the car back and noticed that it had "5.0 L" stamped on the washer fluid reservoir....

Thank You! Another clue: my car is only 40K miles.

I got pass on the smog test. But the technician still wrote down 4.4L on the yellow paper. The computer print for the DMV report does not show the engine size.
Thank you

post a picture of your engine in the car.

The easiest way to tell if you have a N62TU 4.8L is the engine cover will be mainly black with a silver center section. The N62 4.4L uses a light grey engine cover. Also, the valve cover "covers" that say BMW will be black on the N62TU and grey on the N62. 550i came out in 2006, so you should have a 4.8L.

Thank you KyleB, You remind me the photos. I compared the photos with 4.8L and 4.4L, Mine is 4.8L
I also drove to a BMW specialist. He told me it is 4.8. He said if someone replaced your engine, he would not use 4.4L. It is easy to replace with 4.8L
Thank you all for your help.
