I have found a couple of nice 2002 525i/5spd sports for like $10k. A complete pullout LS6 engine & transmission is $6k. The stock LS6 is only good for 400hp, but the list of relativly inexpensive modifications is a mile long.

I think the particular ones you are looking for have been removed due to extra stuff in the images...

Why not buy the M5 motor from the guy on ebay posted on this forum a few days ago, certainly within your price range.

Here is something actually ON TOPIC for you to review:
http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=567694
I assume you have already seen this, since it is on ls1tech, but the buy basically put a Chevy V8 into a Z3. Now THAT would be a fun car. And you could buy a used Z3 for about $12k these days (in good shape, too). You should email that guy and see what he had to do with the computer systems. An E39 would likely have the same controls/issues as a Z3 would.
Good luck with your project.

Yeah that’s the LSx motor alright. It must be a sling shot with a min of 350 crank hp, could be more with heads and whatever cam he used . I see he has the 853 heads so there not high performance but decent, LS6 intake, good power.
As far as a LS7 in a E60 Hell ya! Cuts down on rotating mass and makes the same power. And you could have it running on its own Computer like a holley, msd, mallory one of those stand alone deals get a painless kit and modify from there. Kind of like a piggyback, Emission testing is the biggest obstacle though good luck

I purchased a 2008 M5 that had the complete engine swap taken out. I want to put the car back together but don't have 13K for the 5.0L V10 engine. What motor would fit that I could swap into the car that wouldn't run that kind of money?
