Eh, drive the front wheels? What'ch U talking bout?

If anyone else is interested, the superchargers are available at www.esstuning.com. They are coming out with a TS3 kit (450 HP) for the 530i, but the cost would exceed what a LS7 swap would cost.

I don't think there is anything not natural about a Chevy V8 in a BMW. Zora Duntov, who worked on the Gen I SBC design team, was raised and educated in Berlin. His legacy lives on in all SBC. Here is his bio, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zora_Arkus-Duntov.

I am a hot rodder by nature, but don't have the funds yet to spend 100 big ones on an M5.
If you have the skills and ability to make such a major swap, then go for it. To each his own. However, I really don't follow the logic of invoking the name of a long dead Belgian motor legend to justify the "correctness" of this endeavor. Because this historic individual lived in Germany and worked for a US-based company during his life, that is somehow relevant to whether or not someone should put an American-made engine in a German-made car in 2008?

I think what the original poster may have meant by unnatural, is that it confuses the car's identity. Is a car just a body? I mean, if you take a Breitling movement and put it into a Rolex case and dial, what kind of watch is it?

Nonetheless, if you can make it happen and have fun doing it, then more power to you (no pun intended).

Aren't most Breitling and Rolex watches these days using ETA or Valjoux movements?

Ha ha! Actually, Breitling does use ETA movements in many models, as do TAG Heuer, Omega, IWC, and I'm sure to your chagrin, Officine Panerai! Rolex, never. I think Mr. Duntov favored Timex.

Thanks, you have given me something to think about. I do believe my BMW has a unique spirit. However, the mechanical engineer part of my brain sees the car as an accumulation of parts.

I have been down this road before. After my wife drove her 99 Mustang Convertible for 100k miles, I pulled out the V6, and put in a 500hp turbo modular V8. I also converted the car to a Cobra inside and out. However, the guys on the Mustang forum said the same thing, "the car was not a "cobra" but an abomination," eventhough the car had all the same components as a cobra plus 110 hp extra. So, they were taking the same perspective as you, that somehow a car was "born" a Cobra rather than just being an assembly of parts.

I think the Rolex Daytona may have used a Zenith movement till 2000 My Panerai's aren't in house movements although they do finally make one. ;P

Rolex made the Daytona movement from 1961 to 1988, then outsourced the Zenith El Primero until 2000. No ETAs, though. Something tells me we've hijacked this thread and no one else gives a crap.

That's sorta what I was getting at, but not right on point. I can't see myself tearing a part a BMW and putting something there that wasn't from the factory or even the same brand. I can justify putting an M5 motor into a regular 5er, if it can even be done, haven't ever researched it, but never an LSx motor into one. I think a lot of that has to do with the higher prices of these cars that we all love. I used to drive cheap Honda Civic hatchbacks and Integra's and would rip them apart all day putting higher trim parts into my cheap low trim model, so I can relate to your Cobra story, but they were still from Honda as your's were from another Ford. I've even had friends with 240's and RX7's put LS1's into them and I thought they were the coolest thing ever, but for some really odd reason I can't bring myself to think that same way about this situation.

You guys have it all wrong . . . and stop talking about watches cause your stealing the original post.

It's not about how much a BMW cost, or that it's a BMW. This is about science and engineering at play. So Mike, if you think it can be done, I'd love to see and hear about it. It's your toy and your money.

Personally, I think it would be a challenge, and while it may not amuse many BMW fans, it would be quite a personal achievement that I think, if done successfully, you would be a great asset to companies that mod high tech cars. Now, I'm not talking about fitting a corvette engine onto a Fiero frame with a Lamborghini body trim. That's a different story.

Let us know what you decide to do and where you're from.
