hi guys

i think there must be something wrong with my car. ive got a 2005 525d auto, and i get about 24.9mpg on the motorway cruising at 70mph. i only got this car 2 weeks ago and thought the poor mpg must down to getting the car serviced so i had that done and it still has not improved anything.

also only today the engine management light has come on! and the computer is saying "INCRESSED EMMISIONS" what could be the problem?

any advice would be helpfull, especially with price of fuel in uk.

PS will putting that REDEX stuff in the fuel to clean the injectors help at all.

I have a 530d 2004 and got this "increased emissions" message once. I checked the engine superficially and found out the plug in the EGR wasn't attached properly. I plugged it back in with a "click", and after few kilometers the message disappeared.
Of course this is just a random guess, but shouldn't hurt if you checked the plug. It might look as connected properly but check it attentively.
The plug I refer to is shown here in the picture. Just take the acoustic cover off and there it is.

Are you sure 24.9mpg is not just an average since the MPG was last reset ??
Have you tried resetting it whilst on the motorway, and measured over at least about 15 to 30 miles ??

I used to get 25mpg on my 525d, but that was purely around town. ..........So what are you getting around town ?? !!

thanks for the reply guys,

FAO ANZAFIN: ive checked the plug as you advised, that is pluged in correctly. anymore ideas?

FAO GUDGE: that was on the motorway, pure motorway 24.9 and around town about 20.5, and im not one those drivers thats hard on the throttle.

for example i filled her up to the top of the brime, done about 90 mile journey on the motorway at 70-75mph got to the nearest station, filled her up again and it cost me about ?16.00.

do you guys think that liquid you put in with the fuel will help clear up any clogged injectors.

The 177bhp 525d isn't amazingly economical. Mine has a manual gearbox and returns about 26mpg around town and 33mpg on a long motorway run. Yours being auto will do even less. Have you checked that your computer is set to UK gallons instead of US ones? If the warning light is staying on you're best off just getting it to a dealer or independent who'll be able to read the fault code for you.

Not sure of your overall mileage, buut as a comparison I have a e61 auto 525dmsport and for the past year my average has been 34.4mpg. This is a mixture of 25mile commute in traffic and long motorway journeys, with the cruise set to 80-85 depending on the traffic. At 80mph on the motorway, mine is easily doing 38-40mpg with the aircon etc on.

I have noticed I get better consumption in the summer in the warmer temperatures and I had the glow plug control unit replaced under warranty and that add a couple of mpg. I am just coming up to 65,000 miles.

I would say that this engine is slightly underpowered for the car, pulling away, stop, start traffic really kills the consumption, low 20s. But get it on the motorway and tickign over at 1,800 rpm (80sih) and will go all day in the high 30's mpg.

Good luck.

Cheers

Not sure if it will cure your problem........You do appear to have some type of problem here (!). But a double boost of Millers Sport 4 after filling up always makes the engine run a bit better..........Cheapest place to buy (I know of) is Ebay.........?11 delivered.
