Hi guys

Thaks to everyone who has taken the time to reply to my post, it is much appreciated.
It certainly sounds like I've been stung and have ended up with a lemon.

Considering this is my first BMW, it does not hold well for getting another one when I want to change the car in the future.

I'll let you know what the dealer says after I've taken it in.
Nephs - I've just edited my post - have another look.

Is your 525D auto or manual?
Were the Jeep and Freelander auto or manual? I think the auto really kills consumption in heavy, slow moving traffic. I know in my 530D, if I'm stop-start/crawling at no more than about 10mph the instant mpg needle goes right over to the right (16mpg or less). Once it gets over that and into 2nd gear it will crawl along on it's own without me touching the throttle and shows over 30 or 35mpg on the needle.
I personally don't think diesels (whichever ones) are that great in city traffic consumption-wise. Their advantage over petrols seems to increase massively once you're in free moving traffic/clear roads.
The combination of big diesel and an auto box in my case is giving lower consumption than I had expected.
My last car was a manual Alfa 156 2.4JTD and I was averaging 42mpg overall, including my journeys to work in traffic. My current overall average is about 30mpg in the BMW! OK, it's got a 25% bigger engine and 25% more power but that's still worse like for like. I believe it's the auto box that's making the biggest difference.
Still haven't managed over 41mpg though. Did a motorway run recently and at 80 to 90mph that was the best I got. Could have got more at lower speeds I guess.

Have you been on a long run with yours without traffic? See what mpg you get then. If it's still really bad then there must be something wrong.
All my cars have had to be auto as my wife passed on an auto license only (a sin I know)

Haven't really taken it for a run but may try at the weekend.

hmmmm,

well it seems to me you either get a good one or a bad one. i have a 530d sport had it for 2 years bought the car when it was 6 months old at first i was receiving around 27 mpg for the best part of 1 year then all of a sudden it dropped to 22 -23 mpg not as bad as 19 i have spoken to my dealer on a number of occasions and he has told me that if there are no warnings on the idrive then there is not alot they could do unless the smell of deisel in and out of the vehicle and a drop in power was found as the injector's could be leaking so as being very friendly with the dealer he told me to bring it in stating it was smelling of diesel which i have done they have now had the car for the second day and i am awaiting there call as i type this fingers crossed they find something the car has just turned 30000 miles

will keep you all posted

Averaging 44mpg weekly on a 50/50 mix of motorway & traffic, thats with my Auto 525d MSport 3ltr... I think your Journey Comp needs reset through the idrive or the individual settings via the left hand stalk lower button, RTFM for details.

Good Luck

A lot more! Sticking around 65-70mph on a long M25/M4 ride I got almost 55mpg on the OBC! But it's actually mentally harder to drive most economically because you have to think so much more rather than relying on the go-fast pedal... You have to watch harder to anticipate overtakes and gaps...

It does appear you've got one the 'bad' ones but the dealer won't be convinced... Best way would be to try another one over the same routes and see if it's noticably better? (Dealer obliging of course!)

I would also trying contacting BMW UK themselves directly for their advice/opinion?

Contacted BMW UK who gave me the company line about how the cars are tested and that real life driving can be different to their lab results.

They did admit at the end of the email though that "19mpg does sound a little low".

In the end they said I had to take it up with my dealer

I recently zero'd my trip as I have just had a DMS remap, before I zero'd it it was reading 38.3 thats a mixture of town and m/way work over 7000 miles, my old E39 525d did 43.2 over 40,000 miles so the new one is worse. I have now done 120 miles only around town and reading 29.1 and thats with a heavy foot to enjoy the remap, mine is manual though.

Good luck if you have to fight with your dealer, I bought an "Approved Used BMW" that turned out to have been in an accident amongst other problems so it had really bad paintwork on the passenger side, the dealer reply was "if I had wanted a new car then I should have bought a new one", I even complained to BMW but they said it was a sales issue so couldn't help.............

Yes, indeed that's true. But you should be able to get within 75-80% of those figures fairly easily!

I have the same 525d and it is really thirsty when in town during the rush hour using first and second all the time. I would say that I get about the same for this type of driving you can see it if you reset the trip and then do this type of journey. However I do about 800 miles a week ( yorkshire - glasgow and pottering around sheffield) and my mean weekly MPG is 40.4. - Moral is don't take it out in the rush hour!!
