Hey guys!

I'm new here at the forum, and i just got an E61 520d LCI. Damn it drives great! It's a real pleasure to sit behind the wheel!!

But I am a little tired of the fuel economy ..

It should drive about 5,8l/100km right? ..and have heard from a couple of people that should go about that or maybe more.

After the last refueling, it has gone 7,44l/100km! ..even I have drived very quietly, except for a few accelerations

The car is German 177hp and Steptronic. From August 2007. However, it has just passed 200000 km.

Would it help whit an update of the entire car software when it is only 4 years old?
Or could it be the injectors? (I read about the on this page)

Hope you guys can help!!

And by the way.. Sorry my bad english

Best regards Jesper!

Mvh Jesper

Hej Jesper,

That is indeed an atrociously poor mileage for the 177 bhp. I had the manual and never got less than 15.6 in mixed driving. You have the slushbox and that might kill a little but nowhere near the poor mileage you are seeing, which is worse than my 535d automatic. I'd imagine your fuel system might need a good cleaning. I don't know whether the turbo is regulated by vacuum hoses like on the 6 cylinders but that has a tendency to go brittle and make you loose power and economy. Maybe try some BelAdd fuel additive and see if a 10 minute cleaning does wonders before you pay a fortune to a mechanic. If memory serves, it costs less than 200 kroner (40 usd) for the hefty treatment.

Hej, guys ... and welcome to the Forum, Jesper!

Kind of find it funny to read that you (NavarroOne) consider 5.8 or 7.44l per 100km atrocious!!

OK... I am not driving the 177hp engine (but the 286hp one), and mine is not a Diesel, and also an Automatic. My city consumption is 11.4l/100 km with a really conservative driving style. That's what I would call atrocious. Highway is much better though - closer to 8.1l/100 km (and kicking it :-).

I don't know, but even 7.44 sounds good to me.
What's the diesel price in Denmark these days?

A gallon of Premium (92 Octane) Super sells for around $3.70 right now in Chicago.... yuck! Even though that's quite tough on the Americans (when I moved to the U.S. 11 years ago, I bought a gallon [3.58 liters] of gasoline for .99 cents... ), it's probably still much more expensive in Europe right now. In Germany, a Liter of 'Super' goes for 1.66 Euro, I believe...

Oh, well.... wouldn't want to switch my 530i for any more fuel efficient Jap rice pot... even if the gallon goes up to $7 !!!
.....I just LOVE my thirsty 530 !!!

NavarroOne - Yes, not exactly what I had expected it would run to the gallon!
I have actually added diesel additive after the last refuelling. Don't know the result yet
Has also considered belladd intake cleaner / air mass meter clean.

ZGERMAN - Well okay, maybe that's a lot relative to your 530i: D But whit this fuel economy, I might as well have bought a 530d or 535d .. hmm: (

The price of a liter of diesel in Denmark are between 10 and 11 kr right now .. (1,93-2,12$)
I don´t know how to convert it to the gallon ..

No problem. I had the same issue - until I found this site (which definitely helps with the l/100km vs. mpg conversion): Calculator-Converter
Hope you'll get your mileage back, Jesper!

Hehe I know what you mean, but since I discovered modern diesels, my perspective have completely changed. My oil burner also had 286 hp stock but with the twin turbo, it was a cinch to pump it up to 335 hp and 680 nm torque (502 ft-lb) with a simple remap. It pulls 0-62 mph in 5.9 secs and vmax'es at 274 km/h (170 mph). Sounds sweet too, and revs very willingly to 5000 rpm. When I go Porsche and AMG hunting on the autobahn, I like to make the most of it while they are willing to play; soon they have to hit the gas station - i feel like the energizer bunny driving this thing.

When I had the 520d I had one run where I did over 1.400 km (870 miles) on a tankful but the norm was admittedly more like 1.000 km as I have a heavy rightfoot. The new f10 goes 2 km/l further and have 7 hp more; in the 1-series it's slightly above 200 hp whereas in the 3-series, in a special economy version reduced to 163 hp, it goes 24.4 km/l in mixed driving - or about 58 mpg. Why not make use of that and feel good about leaving a reasonably healthy planet to our kids?

PS first time I moved to the States, a gallon of 87 regular cost 69 cents..

Don't think the additive in th fuel tank will do it. If you hop on bmwforum.dk you can see the post I made there about the specific product that was recommended to me.
