well id be going down the road that, the E60 isnt really a high sitting car as standard, its lower than normal. and most cars at 20k are like jeeps anyway!!!!
Seriouslt htough car same height same weight would have still had the same damage. please stop going on about it shouldnt happen, you shouldnt hit 6- 8 inchs of water at 35mph with a car that weighs as much as it does, almost liking hitting a brick wall at that speed ( note almost was stated).
But at the end of the day it happens we have all had things like this happen we just got to get on with it. and sort it out.

Wow...I'm kind of suprised that the car sustained all of that damage from just water.

I am being serious.....pardon my ignorance. I know water can hydrolock an engine. An engine cannot compress water so that will bend valves, etc.

I'm just shocked that 6-8 inches of water will destroy the undercarriage of the car and be enough to get into the air intake and trash the motor.

I've had lots of cars and have driven then through snowstorms and deep puddles of water, etc and I've never had this kind of damage. I took my 2000 pontiac through a huge puddle and it didn't die

Maybe if he went through a foot and a half of water at 35 MPH but only 6 inches? Half a foot! I don't even see half a foot of water touching my foglights. Maybe the water was higher, I don't know. I'm just genuinely shocked that 6-8 inches of water trashed the undercarriage of the car and got into the air intake enough to hydrolock the motor and trash that too.

When I was younger (and stupider) I used to love driving through huge bodies of water and make huge waves in my Ford Mustangs. I even had two Mustangs (a 95 Cobra R and a 95 Cobra) in which the MAF mater and filter were relocated to the front bumper for a cold air intake and I ran through water with both of those cars and never trashed them. They were both supercharged, pushing 12 lbs of boost, and over 500 horsepower and didn't have a problem with the rain. they also had lowered suspensions.

I guess I'm just going to avoid large standing bodies of water with this car. I'm not knocking the car, like I said earlier, i'm just shocked that 6 inches of water can do all that damage.

not more that 35 miles/hr and it probably rose till about the lower level of the front grill though frankly speaking it happended so fast that i am not sure but the moment i saw that i had gone in water i slowed immediately.the bottom line is that water is there in the airfilter and engine and my concern is who is gonna pay for it?will i have ot pay out of my pocket?

Well, if it went to the lower level of the front grill, then it's probably not 6 - 8 inches. I just went outside to look at my car and the lower level of the front grill goes up to half of the rim and covers the whole side skirt. That's over a foot. Everyone is right, hitting such a large body of water at such speed would destroy the car. I could see that shredding the plastic underbody panels and blasting into the motor.

Damn, sorry to hear that.

It seems strange to me that 6 inches of water can damage a car going 35 miles per hour. It rains heavy in NJ from time to time and I do remember hitting paddle of water on a highway doing 60-70 mph. The deeper paddles could very well be 6 inches deep. Sometimes the moment I hit a paddle I could see water reaching my headlights and higher and never any damage.

same thing happened to me last year,i attempted to drive through a puddle at like 10mph and my car stalled, all other cars were going by with no problem, even little Mini went by,in the meantime just across from where i was,on the opposite lane of highway brand new M5 stalled as well...Six weeks later i had my car back with brand new engine, had to pay 1K deductible. On the positive note my car now runs faster than ever,i think because i did not adhere to a break-in rules this time-go figure! It might be that BMW sport sits lower than most of the cars, but i also tend to think it has some design flow when it comes to water damage as it sucked water through air filters which are sitting on top of the engine.Your insurance policy must have provision for that-they all do as i found out later.

yes my insurance will foot the bill(comprehensive coverage 250 deduc).they are still thrying to figure out how much the damage is.
like i have said before i was bot going beyond 30 miles +-5 and no it was a big dip for the undercarriage to have hit the road and get damaged..also the front bumber does not even have a scratch on it or under it(if the dip was there the underside of the bumber should have shn some damage.).the height is not that imp in figuring if it is going to enter the engine..if the car strikes a column of ater it is going to splashthe water up and it does reach the headlights and does enter.the only thing that is not explained like i said is the damage to the undercarriage.i am not criticizing anyone or trying to question anyone's abilities ..al i am doing is getting into a conversation and trying ot understand y such a sturdy car should suffer such a damage.
the lesson is if you see a water column no matter how deep is it..DONT CROSS IT...JUST TAKE A DIVERSION.BELIEVE ME IT WILL BE WORTH IT.
WILL KEEP YOU INFORMED
