Metallic paint has the glitters in them versus no glitter in non metallic. I think only the alpine white is non metallic. All other bmw colors (maybe with exception of jet black too) is metallic. Same process, same number of layers. I think they charged more for metallic in the 3 series, but no extra cost for the 5,6, or 7 series.

I think I am going crazy, but when I ordered my car the metallic paints were a 495$ option the the 525's and all colors were standrad on the 530.

I just went to confirm this and teh bmw website and also edmunds show that there isn o price difference for any of thepaint colors.

I wonder if I am crazy or BMW changed this.

Here in Europe metallic paint is for extra cost. Around 850$ for my mystic blue paint. The two standard colors alpine white and jet black are available for non extra cost.

Metallic paint is std on 3.0l cars upwards in the UK.

Metallic paint costs more as its a 2 pack system i.e clear over base.

In US, there is no extra charge for exterior color for 5-series at all. Period.
