My neighbor/friend Ken just brought his new E300 home
. His family keeps looking at it and it makes me look at it too! No offense to y'all but for me, it makes the 5er look cheap. Please convince me that the 5er is not just a sporty sedan but a classy sport sedan since I am gonna order my 530i within this month
.

To each his own....go with what you feel....having been a previous MB E-Class owner, I have to say that I love the Bimmers. They don't call these "The Ultimate Driving Machines" for nothing...Good luck with whatever you decide on...

Personal Opinion:
Mercedes is for retired folks, it has replaced Cadillac and Buick as their car of choice. If you are nowhere near retirement age and actually enjoy driving, then BMW is the car for you. Leave the Mercs for those that are much closer to the grave.

Drive them both, and I'm sure the sporting attributes of the E60 will win out, no matter how "classy" the Mercedes seems!!

IMHO nothing short of a Bentley Continental GT can make the 5er look cheap, if we are talking about cars in the same class? No, nothing in our class makes our cars look cheap. The design and level of luxury are second to none.

I've only been driven in the back of the E and S class mercs and they do a good job of making the passengers feel relaxed and comfortable. I've always thought that Mercedes took the luxury path and BMW the sporty path, I don't think I would want to be driven around in the back of a 5...it's a drivers car..only merc I've driven was a CLK55..goes like the wind but drifted round corners like wind too.
Decide what you are really looking for and drive both to compare.

If Ken's being a little annoying you should say something like "It's a shame you only got the E300" ...or... "It's pretty good for the base model"

MB's as stated earlier are now the choice of those "over the hill." don't go over the hill

Seriously though, a choice of car is subjective. Not everyone's needs in a car are the same. If you want precise handling and a feeling of total connectedness to the road in a mid-sized sedan, the E60 is the ticket with the Infiniti M the next best thing. But if you want a soft ride and numb steering and a feel of isolation, the E60 is not the ride for you as Lexus and MB provide that better. The Audi A6, to me, is somewhere in the middle as is the Jaguar XF (both, I feel, have a responsive ride (although not E60 responsive) and good comfort).
Everytime I lease a new car, I test drive everything in the class. I always want to feel the competition.
