So i just bought a 2005 545i with 66,000 miles, after my 2004 545i (which also had 66,000 miles) was totalled while innocently sitting parked in front of my house. See very sad picture below:

But i just noticed on my "new" 2005 that the long piece of wood trim on the dashboard near the steering wheel is lifting up on that side. Not sure if a clip has broken or what holds the trim in place.

Does anyone have a schematic of the dash and wood trim and how it attaches to the dash? I saw a DIY pix on the site of what someone did, but it wasn't clear what holds the trim onto the dash or how to take it off and fix it and put it back on. I didn't want to have to pay the dealer to fix it if i can help it.

thanks for any advice.

best.

Try http://www.realoem.com/bmw/ for schematics. Hope this helps.

thanks for the site, it helped a bit, but the pix weren't detailed enough to show me what i was looking for, which is exactly how the trim is hooked into the dash so i can remove it and reinstall it safely without breaking it, or find out why it's sticking up on that one side and fix it.

but i book marked the site for future use as i am sure it will come in handy. thanks again.

Not a problem. I'm sure it is well placed under your bookmarked sites!

it's a friction fit- push it back in. or, take it off completely, as there may be something under there keeping it from going all the way in. I just grab on to the passenger end and pull a little, then pull a bit on the other side to loosen, then back to the edge to pull it all the way out. watch out for the cable harness for the hazard/lock button switch.

The trim piece is just a push fit into plastic bushes.
Try and get a finger or maybe a wide bladed screwdriver behind it at the edge, and lever it gently off. The air vent will come with the trim, as will the hazard etc switch - these will need to be disconnected as the trim becomes loose.

If there is a plastic bush missing, when you get a replacement, just slot it in and turn it 1/4 turn to secure. There are pegs that locate into the back of the wood that go in the bushes.
