passenger side lower
not sure if any of you E60 owners have this problem. i've noticed my 05 530i passenger side is slightly lower than driver side, took some measurements and sure enough, it's 1/2" lower. On the driver side i can fit my hand between top of the tire and the fender to touch the spring, where on the passenger side it's very tight. Took the car in and they told me everything checked out okay, the ride height is within BMW spec. and suspensions is normal and mounted correctly. Am I being paranoid or 1/2" differences is normal? I took the same measurements from other car and they were identical.

that would bug the hell out of me..... you showed them the measurements? and how it was off, and they still insist its within spec? i would go to another dealer and have it checked or insist they should double check .. i hope you get the problem resolved...ericd

This is normal. For whatever reason, all the e60s are this way. I had my 545i lowered with springs and the shop that did this pointed out the same thing you just mentioned. They went ahead and made the correction so all four sides sat the same after an alignment. Well, after about 6 months, my tires prematurely wore out. I sensed something was amissed and after getting new tires had the dealership do the alignment this time.
After the dealership's alignment, I was presented the before and after alignment numbers. The camber on my rear tires were too aggressive which resulted in premature wear. I also noticed that my left driver side was higher than passenger side. So, the dealership reset everything back to BMW specifications which I'm glad they did. Don't worry about the difference, just enjoy the car.

While at lunch dining on sushi (you missed out again Torquey5, like you will tomorrow too
), EuroCarFan and I spoke about this subject. He says it's b/c the battery and gas tank is on the right side.

Also (and I'm sure that someone in UK can be bothered about this), what are the implications for a RHD car?

I agree. Would someone in the UK please measure the front left and right side of their car please and report back to us your findings? TIA.

I may be muddy-ing the waters a little here:
My 530d SE has 225/50 x 17 tyres that are about 5% worn. With the car empty, with 3/4 tank of diesel, taking a vertical line through the wheel centre, the distance from the top of the tyre to the bottom of the wheelarch is 47mm on the left and 46.5mm on the right - near enough to make no difference really - it could even be measurement error!!
I know that in the past, some manufacturers have raised ride height/stiffened springs a little on the drivers side as they consider that most driving is done with the driver only i.e. no passengers. In these enlightened, greener times, pehaps this has changed as more people are encouraged to car share etc.
Hope this helps
