Anybody ever paint OEM 172'S - how did they turn out, any pictures?

I'm thinking of doing this, but not sure yet.

My main concern is that when I sell the car, the market won't like the blacked out wheels and I'll end up having to buy some stock shiny ones.

If you read the other threads, most people remove their mods at selling time exactly for that reason. Even know the mods make the cars look sharp and cool, they are not to everybody's taste and unless someone is a fan of black wheels or Mtech kits, the car will end up sitting in your driveway for way longer than it would take to sell without mods. It's like building a swimming pool in your yard. Most prospective homeowners will usually skip houses with pools, especially those who have children, even though pools are fun and bring a lot of enjoyment. I know people who simply filled their pools with dirt and grew a lawn over them so they could sell their houses.

Go with powder coating - much more durable than paint, here look at post 23 from Eurorev:

Yeah, I've researched the heck out of the paint versus PC, and in the end I am going to paint them myself if anything at all. found a real good thread somewhere on the web, a bunch of geek scientists who drive maxima's or something that said most PC's, unless they spend like $100 g's for a good oven and the technology to go with it, can't regulate their temperature well enough and probably end up over heating the wheels and not cooling them slow enough, thus weakening the wheel.

I know, I know, everyone will have their own opinions, swear they track their BMW after they PC'd and went a kazillion mph around the track until the wheels actually glowed red and no failures - good for them, not for me. Plus paint is cheaper and easier to repair should the need arise.

Thanks pjinca for the thread link. Love the 172's on your car by the way.

Thanks bro, hope the painting goes well. If it does post pics and maybe a DIY, I may follow the same route. I like the 172's on my car as well, just not sure if I like em silver (too close to my cars color making it kind of boring to look at). Good luck

powder coat will probably penetrate the narrow spokes better than paint would.

Ah man, you had to say that didn't you...

We'll see, I still don't know if I want to do it. Guess you could say I'm scared! Scared that it either won't look good or that I will have to buy other wheels when I sell it.

By the way pjinca, you did over 20 years in the AF, right? I'm on 22 in the Army. 5 active and 17 in the Guard.

Thanks for your service man.

No, I did 4 years in the Air Force (of course 4 years inactive). I put Ret. because I am no longer in and I was honorably discharged. Technically a retirement but not with benefits (other than burial assistance). Thank you for your service too. I have thought many times about the reserves.

just to confuse you even more ( ), PVD coating (physical vapor deposition) is more durable (and lighter) than both painting and powder coating. but its not easy to get wheels PVD'ed since its a fairly new process. if you wanted chrome (or black chrome) then PVD is really the only way to go.
ive never seen blacked out 172's but that might look VERY nice.
