Did you reset the odometer / OBC when you filled up?
What grade of fuel are you using, even allowing for your elevation?

Here's a link to our E61's fuel records.

On-board is less than 1% off from my spreadsheet that I've been keeping since 2008.

I've managed 27MPG on a tank with the 550 on a drive in Utah. 25MPG seems doable.

Make sure you clean your Mass Airflow Sensor. My MPG's jumped from 21 to 24.2 just off that alone.

May or may not help in your situation though.

Wow, I need to do something about my fuel economy. I'm getting 18mpg and I rarely do any spirited driving during the week (occasionally on weekends).

Jim, I like the website you referenced in your post. I'll have to give it a closer look! http://www.fuelly.com/
I see they also have a website for phones have to give it a try to see how user friendly it is ...

I drive it like its a race car and I'm getting 18.2 mpg in a 2004 530i. Pretty sure if I was in an M5 they would have peeled me off the side of a tree by now.

Thanks for the reply!

I did reset the odometer.. Im at 265 now, and obc says projected 80 miles left.. not good.

I know my elevation helps me, and to test.. this tank I put 87 octane. That is what I always ran in my e39. I will go to 91 octane on the next tank, but don't believe it should be that off?

I wouldn't even calculate this tank of fuel being that you have idle time involved by doing the seafoam and more than likely some high revving after you were done. I would stop messing with it and then fill it up and go from there

BMW recommends premium unleaded fuel with a minimum 91 AKI for your car's engine (ref 2004 OM page 169). It'll run on lower AKI, but there will definitely be a fuel economy penalty as the ECU retards timing to manage engine knock. You should see an improvement using 91 AKI, and you might be OK using 89 AKI in the winter at your altitude.
