I checked my bimmer yesterday evening, it did not has the word "solar" or "sungate" etched on the windshield. I also tried to put a white paper behind the windshield and looked at the windshield from outside, no pink nor brown color tinted. So, it is a regular glass with rain sensor in the middle top.

You have two options of front glass:

1. regular glass;
2. solar (climate comfort) glass;

Second option is a glass that is tinted in purple/rose color. Regular glass (option one) is greenish/blueish.

Do any of your states require insurance to give glass coverage? My car is insured in Florida, and glass coverage is default. I think youre entitled to 1 replacement per year if I remember what my best friend said correctly.

Massachusetts car insurance cover glass 100% by default but aftermarket. If car is less than 2 years old, insurance will cover OEM glass too, otherwise aftermarket.

The solar (comfort) glass is also widely known as IR blocking glass (that's how it works anyway). Not sure about the E60, but for my E38 the IR glass is easily distinguishable as it has a clear opening in the center for radar detectors (radar detectors will not work properly if aimed through the IR blocking glass).

Actually, thinking about it more, I think the clear spot in the comfort/IR glass is for toll tags and the like.
