I strongly disagree with the above stated.
A car would surely experience performance gains when higher grade of octane is used and it has been proved using dynos. Now, whether the gain in performance equates to the extra dollar spent is a question that has a different answer from consumer to consumer. The consumer research will provide you statistics from the mass and we all know that the mass cannot afford\drive performance cars. They define cars by saying -- A vehicle that takes you from point A to point B. Thats the extent of their knowledge.
A car that is tuned for regular gas will behave very differently with the use of higher octane by responding quicker to acceleration. Go from 87 to 93 in any car and you will answer the question for yourself.
Majority of the people dont notice a difference but there have been many instances where my family members have filled up my gas tank brought back the car and bet if I can tell the difference.
Believe me between Shell 93 and other useless brands I have never been wrong judging.
Also, the way you do it is, you fill your tank as close to empty as possible. The gas station is a couple of miles from my house and I never remember going there with more than a quater tank of gas, majority of the times when the 50 mile msg pops up on my navigation.
