it definitely doesn't take 30 minutes for me either...
car was outside, overnight, during the cold snap (~ -30C) and left it idling for no more than 7-8 mins this morning before leaving, and it was perfect-o! (city bylaw says any idling over 3mins merits a ticket.. so i keep a close eye on the clock)

There must be something wrong with your outside temp gauge it has a - in front of the number ............ I grew up in the windy city until I left for the military and never returned. Stay warm.

in texas, even though we have had 2 weeks straight with 20-30 degree weather (F), i don't even use my heater in my bmw at all, where i always did with previous cars. i think the german cars just retain heat so well (makes sense). also heated seats are great and heat up a lot quicker anyway. once my ass is warm, the rest of my body warms up too

My dads audi is much slower on the heating. And not to speak of jetta i use for work...that car is like an ice cube. My 545i warms up like a toaster hehe.
