I am sure there are orange peels in all current BMWs. However, Orange peels are less on the top part of the car, such as the roof, trunk lid and bonet. However, the orange peels are pronounced on the side body panels, such as the doors.

Interestingly, why so? hmmm...does that mean the paint disperse more evenly on top surface than vertical panels?

Westcoast, thanks for the pro opinion. I will have to rely on the painter to advise if the clear coat is thick enough to be re-polished. And even if so, would there be another problem of getting an evenly finished coat along the body panel? E.g., if the pressure of the polisher is inconsistent, wont it cause uneven reflection instead?

Not sure if a repaint and recoat is a safer and a surer bet to improve the poorly finished paint work, which resulted in uglier orange peel formation.
It may be possible to wet sand and reclear the car. Repainting the car (as opposed to reclearing the car) will be more costly. A new coat of clear, even if only on certain panels, will not cause any change is reflection or colour. Consult a high quality paint shop and they will advise you. Make sure you take a close work at their work before committing. Good luck.

The Orange Peel is not a new term.

Actually, if you look at the most expose colours of them all - the Jet Black - you'll find it on all BMW's.

Since a decade ago the oil based paint was forbidden, the colours are now wather based, which means
that the paint job cannot resist any scratches nor "stone bites" no more.

These new wather colours get their shine from the clear coat level, not from the colour itself.

I.e. M-B has tried a mircoparticle clear coat that shoud protect the paint, but what I have heard about
Helsinki taxi cars, a lot of them has been repainted (we have really, really though contitions there in the winter).

Look hard at this 3 week old E60 beauty and you can see the O P coating.
whats that in the left epipe of the exhaust?

Thanks for the well informed advice. I have taken the car back to the BMW dealer and they will undertake to redo the paint work to my satisfaction, at no extra cost. They admited for not doing a good job, and possibly injected too much paint to begin with. Anyway, will know again in a couple of days to see if any improvements to the finished job. Cheers!

It could have been damaged at the port. When this happens BMW fixes the car there. Also it looks like jet black. The flater looking paint will show orange peel.

The BMW factory finsih clear coat starts out as a dry powder that is sprayed over the color coat. The car body is then baked in an oven to "melt" the powder which becomes a clear coat. I agree it has a fairly high orange peel and I believe that this process is the reason. This process is described on the BMW web site, but I don't have a link to it. I am sure you could find out more about it if you search their web site. I believe the main purpose of this process is to meet environmental regulations. Body shops can't use this technique and resort to liquid (water) based clear coat application which if improperly applied can also develop an orange peel surface.
